| Q: | I'm doing a backup using different volume formats (NTFS, FAT32) for source and destination. When the systemtime changed from summer to wintertime SmartBackup wants to backup alle files, although only some changed. Why? |
| A: | FAT32 and NTFS use different time formats for files. So you can avoid this behavior only by formatting / converting your FAT32 volumes to NTFS. |
Q: Does SmartBackup support tape drives?
| A: | SmartBackup only supports drives integrated in windows as system drives. If you are able to select your tape drive in the Windows Explorer (via a drive letter) SmartBackup will be able to use it. |
| Q: | How do I find files that should be backed up? |
| A: | Use the 'Find Files' dialog, which is available when selecting files and folders for backup. You can open it Use the button below the folder tree. You can use 'Find Files' in order to find important folders, files and documents. |
| Q: | How do I use the synchronize function? |
| A: | Create a File System backup. Click on 'Refreshes and other Settings' tab and click the synchronization check box. Then choose the source folder(s) on the next screen. Now destination and source will be synchronized on every refresh. |
| Q: | Does synchronization delete files from the source? |
| A: | Yes, it does. The synchronize function is designed to make two folders or drives totally identical. Therefore if a file or folder in the destination is deleted, it will be deleted in the source, too. |
| Q: | Is SmartBackup able to backup/restore the operating system? |
| A: | No, SmartBackup was not designed to perform a backup of an operating system. This is a very difficult task, because these kinds of backups cannot be performed, while your operating system is running. In order to backup/restore your operating system, special and expensive software like Norton Ghost is needed. |
| Q: | Can I perform synchronization with files from different drives? |
| A: | Yes, but activate 'Use different Folders for each drive' in order to avoid conflicts with equally named files and folders on both drives. |
| Q: | During a backup the progress dialog seems to stand still for a while, although the hard disk is heavily working. What's wrong? |
A: Everything is fine. When you try to backup a file that is currently in use, SmartBackup activates the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service, which makes a temporary, partial copy of your hard disk partition. This takes some time depending on your hardware.
| Q: | I want to perform automatic refreshes of my backup regularly, e.g. at night. How can I ensure that no user input is needed? |
A: In the 'Refreshing' settings of your backup job unselect 'Confirm before performing refresh' and select 'No progress dialog' at the bottom of the settings dialog.
| Q: | I get an error message regarding the FTP-Connection, while I am performing a FTP-Backup? |
| A: | The most common source for this kind of errors are firewall options on the client/server side. Please turn on the passive mode ( checkbox is under the login text area ) and try again. |
| Q: | I have a registered Version of SmartBackup, but there is still a 'UNREGISTERED' message in the title of the main window. Why? |
| A: | There are three possibilities why this message still remains in the title: |
1. You have not downloaded the full version from the URL, which you received after purchasing the product.
2. Accidentally, you have installed the trial version again. (Have you been asked for a password?)
3. You have installed the trial and the full version into different directories and you have got both versions on your hard disk now.
| Q: | I have a file bigger than 2 GB selected for backup. Why does SmartBackup print out a "DISK FULL ERROR" while backing up to a drive which has more than 2 GB of free space? |
A: If this happens, the drive you have chosen as backup destination is formatted with a FAT file system. The FAT file system does not support files bigger than 2GB and Windows gives an error message "DISK FULL ERROR". This error message is generated by Windows and thus out of our control.
