Portable Installation

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

You can choose to install SmartBackup on a removable drive, e.g. a USB pen drive or a external hard disk. In this case you are able to use SmartBackup as a portable application for backing up more than one computer.

Whenever you plug in this removable drive on a computer, Windows will open it's AutoPlay dialogue. Confirming this dialogue with OK will start SmartBackup. If you have deactivated AutoPlay, you can start SmartBackup by double-clicking on this drive in the Windows Explorer, too. IMPORTANT! The AutoPlay function have to be enabled, in order for this to work. If for some reason, you don't want to enable it, you have to start SmartBackup with the command-line parameter /USB.

If you haven't created a backup job in USB mode on this computer, SmartBackup will offer you to specify files, that should considered for back up in the first step. By pressing the button Backup an Exact Copy backup job will be created. All of the selected files will be stored to a sub-folder of your removable drive and SmartBackup will close automatically. The sub-folder's name is identical to the unique computer ID computed by Windows and can be seen in the Windows' Properties dialogue.

If a USB mode backup job already exists on this computer, it will be refreshed whenever you plug in the removable drive and start SmartBackup in the way described above.
