Mail direction

Allows you to configure the way the Exchange Server Toolbox determines the direction for processed mails.

This determination is the basis for the execution of certain rules, archiving as well as virus and spam scans.

For a clear determination, it is recommended to use a variant for recognizing the origin of an mail and a variant for recognizing the destination in combination.

Mail addresses and domains must be known to the Exchange Server Toolbox in order to use the address or domain check. You can check which addresses are known to the Exchange Server Toolbox under Licensing. It may be necessary to add these addresses manually for correct direction evaluation. At least one mail address with the corresponding domain must be entered under Licensing for the domain check.

If the direction of an mail cannot be clearly determined, it will be treated as incoming for security reasons.

Mail Origin Verification

Here you will find settings that determine the origin of a mail.

The following methods are possible:

Check sender IP address exists locally:

If activated, the system checks whether the IP address of the server from which the mail was received is part of the local network. Only use this method if you are not using an external mail gateway (e.g. Exchange 365)

Check sender mail address exists locally:

If activated, the system checks whether the exact mail address of the sender is known to the Exchange Server Toolbox as a local address. For security reasons, only the envelope entry is checked and not the mail header..

Check sender mail domain exists locally:

If activated, the system checks whether the domain of the sender's mail address is known to the Exchange Server Toolbox as a local address. For security reasons, only the envelope entry is checked and not the mail header.

Mail Destination Verification

Here you will find settings that determine the destination of a mail.

The following methods are possible:

Check recipient mail address exists locally:

If activated, the system checks whether the exact mail address(es) of the recipients are known to the Exchange Server Toolbox as local address(es). For security reasons, only the envelope entry is checked and not the mail header

Check recipient mail domain exists locally:

If activated, the system checks whether the domain(s) of the recipient's mail address(es) are known to the Exchange Server Toolbox as local address(es). For security reasons, only the envelope entry is checked and not the email header.

General

If the IP address or the email address of the sender are available locally, the email will be treated as Internal.

Custom Header

Emails whose headers contain the field specified here with the value also specified here are always treated as Incoming.

Host/IP to mail direction mappings

Here you can define a fixed direction for certain hosts from which an mail is received.

This is useful, for example, if you have a mail gateway in front of the server with the Exchange Server Toolbox, which accepts external mails and forwards them to the Exchange Server Toolbox. In this case, you can define for the corresponding IP address of the gateway, for example, that all mails should be incoming.
