Exchange Server at a turning point
What Microsoft's decision means for the Exchange Server Toolbox
Microsoft Exchange Server is the foundation of countless IT infrastructures for centralized email communication in companies.
We are proud that our Exchange Server Toolbox has supported you in the reliable operation of your Exchange Server for many years.
This makes it more important for us to take a look at Microsoft's course. This is clearly moving away from on-premises operation towards the cloud.
After careful consideration, we have therefore decided against the further development of the Exchange Server Toolbox.
In the following article, we would like to explain the reasons that led us to this decision and give you an orientation for the future of the Exchange Server Toolbox as early as possible.
Microsoft's cloud strategy: on-premises is becoming a niche
Let's first take a look at what is happening with Exchange Server On-Premises.
Microsoft released the new Exchange Server SE version in summer 2025. The functional scope of Exchange Server SE is the same as that of Exchange Server 2019.
The most important difference is that it is now a subscription instead of a purchased version.
This means that Exchange On-Premises is increasingly becoming a niche solution, especially for organizations that are not allowed to switch to the cloud due to internal guidelines or legal requirements.
For everyone else, the following applies: those who still rely on on-premises today will be working in a shrinking ecosystem tomorrow.
The advantages of the cloud
While advantages such as full control and data sovereignty continue to speak in favor of on-premises operation of the Exchange Server, we believe that the reasons for the cloud clearly outweigh the advantages.
Cloud operation not only relieves you of the high internal costs associated with deployment. It also ties up fewer IT resources for security issues.
If you continue to rely exclusively on on-premises operation, you should review your IT strategy in good time.
What this means for the Exchange Server Toolbox
So what does all this mean for the Exchange Server Toolbox, which we developed with a focus on on-premises?
Microsoft's course is clear: on-premises is becoming a discontinued model that will only survive in special scenarios in the long term.
That is why we have decided against the further development of the Exchange Server Toolbox.
In future, we want to deploy our resources where we can offer our customers the greatest added value.
What does this mean for Support & Maintenance?
We will of course fulfill our obligations to the existing contractual relationships.
This means that we will continue to offer support for existing maintenance contracts. Operations will continue as usual.
We will continue to provide fixes for critical security vulnerabilities as part of existing maintenance contracts. However, as of January 1, 2026, we will no longer offer any additional maintenance extensions.
What happens next?
With this article, we have made our decision against the Exchange Server Toolbox transparent.
In the coming weeks and months, we will be publishing a detailed deployment plan that clearly describes the next steps
